Designing gardens to make you smile
Gardens need to be beautiful, relaxing and practical, with somewhere to escape from daily cares. They should make their owners smile every time they are stepped into, whatever the season or weather.
The first snowdrop poking its head out of the snow, the fragrance of sweet peas by a seat or the crunch of dried autumn leaves….. What would make you smile?
From bare plots to extremely mature landscapes, large or small, I offer a personal garden & border design service to help transform your garden into a beautiful individual space that works for you & your family, friends and even pets. It is my job to listen, understand and interpret your needs, likes, dislikes and wishes. If there are existing features or plants of sentimental value I can sensitively incorporate them into a design. One of the keys to the long term success of a garden is ensuring that planting is right for the amount of time you have to care for it and that the plants are suitable for your garden, I can provide the expertise to do this.
You can completely transform your whole garden, have a design and then tackle the hard and soft landscaping a bit at a time yourself or get landscapers in. I’m more than happy to look at one area of the garden, individual borders, corners or problem areas I work with many of my customers’ over a number of years. It’s your garden I can be as flexible as you need.
I use specialist landscape software to draw and photographs to convey the feel of the design, which helps my customers envisage their design.
Hello my name is Michelle Bolton, I studied for a National Diploma in Horticulture at Bishop Burton College as a mature student in 2004. Whilst at college I found a real passion for garden design. After achieving a distinction I started Leafy Spaces in 2006 looking after gardens, building my clientele and reputation as a horticulturalist. Over time and with experience I built up the design aspect of my work. I am now solely a garden designer and as a result re-launched my business as Leafy Garden Design. When I first started designing I hand drew everything but a few years back switched to specialist CAD and so have continued to learn, broadening & honing my skills.
I am personally an avid gardener, my own garden being nearly an acre that includes a small oak woodland under planted with bulbs, herbaceous garden, orchard, vegetable plot, fruit cage, chickens and bee hives.
Hi Michelle, I am pleased to say we have been very happy with the garden design service that you have provided. You appeared to really appreciate what we already had at Bowengarth and soon recognised what we needed to suit our lifestyle. Your design modernised the garden and met our requests for lower maintenance whilst retaining some existing features and plants. In particular I thought your judgement was good on how much change to make even though we gave you no budget as guidance; much of the work we see as achievable within our motivation and energy levels albeit perhaps to be planned over a couple of years which is just what we asked you to do. Many thanks Rosie & Ian
"From the initial design through to the final planting, we were delighted with our new garden that suits all of our family needs."
Having had a new house built recently we have used the services of Michelle for designing, planning and planting our new garden. We have been very pleased with all aspects of her work from the initial consultations through the design, planting and ongoing guidance and support. We would not hesitate to recommend Leafy Garden Design. Sue and Mike Nunn
My unmanageable garden without shape, has now taken shape thanks to Michelle. The natural spring that runs through our garden was hidden by overgrown shrubbery, Michelle has transformed it into a lovely walkway with beautiful flowers starting with the snowdrops. The spring is now a feature in our garden. Maintain regularly by Michelle I am delighted with everything she has done. Michelle is very conscientious with her work, from her first visit, the plans she drew up and then the hard work of turning an overgrown area into a beautiful one. I am very happy to recommend Michelle to anyone that needs help in the garden. Kind Regards Lesley
My wife Ellen and I love our garden, and although we know how to generally keep it tidy, such as mowing the lawns and weeding ect, we have always struggled to know what type of plants and shrubs suit various situations (particularly on our poor sandy soil) and also how and when to prune them back. So when a good friend suggested help from their gardener Michelle back in 2008, we arranged to meet her and talk through our requirements. We were impressed with her qualifications, knowledge and passion for all round gardening so we engaged her for regular work, starting with designing, planting out and maintaining what is now a fantastic deep border of trees, shrubs and ground covering flowering plants. It looked really good from the start but now it looks amazing with lots of beautiful colour in all seasons, we are absolutely thrilled with it and with our own workload lightened; we now sit in the garden on summer evenings and enjoy it! She has vastly improved every aspect of our garden and she is such a delightful and cheerful person to have around, it is a real pleasure having her work for us. We look forward to her visits and highly recommend Michelle and Leafy Garden Design. Neil and Ellen Knapton Caistor
Our garden was a wide, shallow uninspiring garden on two levels just covered in grass. We discussed our ideas with Michelle for hardlandscaping, colour preferences for plants and for keeping the planting and design sypathetic to our old cottage style house. Michelle produced a design, which totally transformed our garden, giving the illusion of more depth and space plus she added interest and texture. She drew up detailed plans including choice of materials and planting schemes. She was very focused and great fun to work with. We now have a beautiful garden and absolutely love the planting and colour scheme, all totally in keeping with the house. Our garden is greatly admired by visitors and passers by generating lots of lovely comments. We have no hesitation in recommending Michelle Bolton of Leafy Garden Design to anyone wishing to employ a garden designer. Pat Bosanquet.
